Emergency Planning

An emergency is defined in the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, R.S.O.1990 (as amended) as “a situation or an impending situation that constitutes a danger of major proportions that could result in serious harm to persons or substantial damage to property and that is caused by the forces of nature, a disease or other health risk, an accident or an act whether intentional or otherwise”.

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula has developed an Emergency Response Plan which allows for us to be prepared to facilitate a controlled and coordinated municipal response to an emergency or perceived emergency occurring within or affecting the Town.

With our close proximity to Lake Huron and Georgian Bay there is the possibility of severe summer and winter storms. Also, being home to Bruce Power does require certain emergency preparedness measures be met, in the highly unlikely situation of a nuclear emergency.

Be Prepared Grey Bruce Huron is an educational resource for the different types of emergencies we should all be prepared for, to ensure the safety of our families.

In an emergency, you will need some basic supplies. You may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. For information on how to prepare a family emergency kit visit the Government of Canada – Get Prepared

The Emergency Response Plan outlines the responsibilities of the Town of South Bruce Peninsula and the various organizations which would respond in emergency situations. It also gives programming direction for education and training.

Community Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC)

The CEMC is responsible for coordinating the emergency management program, building relationships with various agencies and organizations and facilitating changes and corrections to the plan in order to ensure annual compliance with legislation as monitored by Emergency Management Ontario.

Municipal Emergency Control Group

All emergency responses will be directed and controlled by the group of officials who will be responsible for coordinating the provision of essential services needed to minimize the effects of the emergency on the municipality.

The Municipal Control Group for the Town consists of the following:

  • Mayor
  • Chief Administrative Officer
  • CEMC
  • Manager of Emergency Services
  • Emergency Information Officer (EIO)
  • Director of Public Works
  • Manager of Parks, Recreation & Culture
  • Chief Building Official
  • Director of Financial Services/Treasurer

Preparation for an emergency is important to everyone. Those with disabilities or special needs should ensure that they have plans in place should a large scale emergency arise. Emergency Preparedness Guide for People with Disabilities / Special Needs is an important document to view before an emergency happens.

In an emergency, your family may not be together, or you may be asked to evacuate your home. Thinking about what you would do in different situations and preparing a plan with every member of your family is the first step to being prepared. Make a Plan. Build a Kit. Be Informed.
